Fascinated With Fridays : 3 Separate Things

Here's what's captured my interest this Friday!

As the re-release of the 1998 must have toy, the Furby, is making headlines this week, Hello Giggles had a fun post featuring other toy fad's of the 90s. Many of which, skip-its, pogs, floam; were immediately banned from my elementary school. (krazy bones, and snap bracelets were also banned from the play ground, but interestingly did not make the list).

As I finally got around to opening the cover of this summer's AIHS Research News, the first story drew my attention. University of Alberta law professor Timothy Caufeild's book 'The Cure for Everything' is supposed to be worth a read. In it he debunks many health myth's and cures, often using himself as a guinea pig, all in an effort to drive home the message that healthy living really is the cure for everything. Don't have time to read the book? You can just read his article on the Huffington Post "9 Health Myths Debunked."

I've been feeling in a bit of a lab related rut lately, maybe too many days spent on the same equipment, maybe just contemplation about being one year in with no end in sight. Anyways this leads me to wanting to feel more motivated, get successful, I know there have been a bunch of posts round the blog-o-sphere recently about 'Eating your Frog' so here's one about 'What Successful People Do with the First Hour of Their Work Day." How do you start off your day, with a specific ritual? I'd love to try to get into some wake-up sun salutations.

Fascinated on Fridays: Furby is Back!

I was just over at Miss Indie's reading her 'Friday's Favourite Things' and gasp.... Furbies are back she says! (Miss Indie's got a great blog, and every single friday I find my way over to something amazing thanks to her lists)

Oh I grew up in the glory days of the Furby, I remember the wild rush and line ups back in 1998 when myself and everyone else I knew wanted one for Christmas. That year my Aunt managed to get one for me from a store in Timmons (it was an all grey one) and we got another (the spotted grey and pink one) from a raffle at a Canadian Tire in the Sault...I remember there being hundreds of people there that night because a shipment of something like 25 of the things came in.

Image comes from Angelfire's Furbsite.

This was way better than neopets... this was a real life fuzzy toy (about as solid as a brick under the fuzz) that you could feed, tickle, pet and love.... and they were definitely vocal about wanting all that attention. Getting the stupid things to sleep through the night may have been worse than actual babies....at least until you finally resorted to pulling the batteries out.

What became of my precious Furbies... well as all fads do pass, I eventually got bored of the little guy. I know that the grey one sat in the toy bin at my Nana's for years, along with a Tickle-Me-Elmo that probably needed to be exorcised (as the voice got really strange the older that got). The last time I saw this furby he was looking worse for wear, with the fabric covering his ears pulled off and the rest of his fur looking pretty scragly... I think he may have even been missing an eye lid. (the next set of cousins in my family are a pair of brothers and I think they play too hard with Furby)

So that brings me to today, and the Walmart Website's announcement that Hasbro has brought Furby back!

I have to say.. .these solid colour guys, with their digital eyes and plastic ears just don't seem as cute to me. But who knows, maybe my littlest cousin Caitlin will be begging for one for Christmas this year just like I did way back when.

Scully and Mulder together again?

First: Mr David Duchovny was my very first crush, way back in my childhood years there really wasn't anyone more appealing than the erratic, true believer, little bit of a bad boy Agent Fox Mulder.

Second: If you grew up in the 90s, then you know you spent many sleepless nights, terrified to sleep because of something that happened on an episode of the X-files. Recently I asked the boy to name his most memorable/terrifying episode and believe it or not we both recall the same one: Darkness Falls. Featuring swarms of killer bugs that spin you into cocoons and kill you (recall the person who seeks shelter in a car only to have the bugs find their way in through the vents). Maybe it comes from growing up in black fly country (norther Ontario) or just the creepy crawly nature but this one surely stands out the most.

Third:
When 'I Want to Believe' came out in 2008, I was thrilled, it had been so long since the end of the show in 2002, and you bet I rushed out to see the new movie. Was a mildly disappointed that this film featured no aliens sure, and I probably wasn't the only one as the film received mostly negative reviews. But I was happy to see Scully and Mulder together at last after the credits heading towards paradise.

So what do I want to Believe? That despite Duchovny's reps denying the rumours springing up all over the internet this week....That Mr. Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are in fact together in real life. Common, that really would be perfect right?

Either way, hopefully the buzz the rumours have generated might just be the best thing towards getting a 3rd movie produced soon.

Fascinated with Fridays: Betty White

Oh Betty, she recently celebrated her 90th birthday. I recently red her new book:  if you ask me. (and  of course you won't)

This book was quite simply one of the cheeriest things a person could ever read. I went through it in about 3 hours, and smiled the whole time, no matter the topic. It's bassically a collection of stories from the course of her life dealing with an assortment of topics. More importantly if features a sections about animals, how much she loves them, and why they're just all around better than people.

I immediately gave my copy of this book to a friend to read, and now I'm recommending it to you all. If everyone could just aspire to be as genuinely a wonderful person as Betty White, then I'm pretty sure we could achieve world peace, an end to climate change, and save all the endangered species from extinction.

Another person we should all be more is George Takei, but that's another story for another day, right now I found this on his facebook, and laughed out loud.

Great advice Betty, so now I just need to grow a vagina, and rock some serious myography experiments next week.

Happy Friday all!

Fascinated on Fridays: Sexy Yoga Ads

So, if you don't already, and you're into yoga at all, you should be following Yoga Dork.

Really, go there now.

Well read what I have to say first.

Lately there's been alot of 'talk' (putting it mildly) in the world of Yogi's (which clearly I'd like to be one, but am not) about using sex/nudity/whatever to sell Yoga products/anything.

As if Yoga is somehow different/more enlightened/whatever than any other product out there.

Don't think Yoga is a product..... look again.

But that's cool anyways, cause I am soooo buying it (lulu I love you....hopelessly)

This week tho, I'm fascinated by these two videos brought to my attention by Yoga Dork.

So, first, clearly I want to be her. I mean she totally rocks a sick handstand. Second, based on this commercial alone, if I was in a store, and Equinox Undies were to be had, I'd probably buy them, on the basis of this ad. and Third, is it just me or does it kinda look like she has a gentleman caller snoozing in that bed? Well the Yogi in the video is Briohny Smyth, check out some of her instructional videos, like this one where she shows you how to rock those handstands.

Video numero 2, Now he really rocks this shiat! So good, and worth a chuckle... then another one. Anyways, the Yogi in question this time around is Michael A. Stusser, and he does a mean parody, and an even better arm balance.

Anyways hope you enjoyed this just as much as I did... and now I need to make myself actually go to a Yoga class this week....so much easier to do in summer.

Fascinated with Fridays: Ryan Gosling Tumblrs

So I had stumbled upon one of these before, probably from a link from one of my friends (she knows who she is) and lol-ed, hard. And today, via Miss Indie's Friday's Favourite Things, OMG there's a crafty one. Then I spent the happiest hour of my day clicking around for more. So here he is ladies, Ryan, in all his glory.

F*ck Yeah! Ryan Gosling

There's a bunch more, very specific ones (poli sci ryan, film studies ryan, biostats ryan) find a list here.

And on an MTV interview you can watch Ryan read some of his "Hey Girl" lines.

And did I just do a post full of Ryan Gosling.... when Really I like Ryan Reynolds better? Yes...Yes I did.

So that's what's fascinating me this Friday. Cheers
