This is how we got here

My mom's family hails from Stragolera, a tiny mountain town in Calabria in southern Italy. They came over to Canada to settle in Sault Ste Marie in the 60s along with waves of Italians coming to work at the steel plant and paper mill.

This summer, I had the opportunity, to visit the house my nana and grandpa lived in, and where my mom and an Aunt and Uncle spent the first years of their lives.

It was a beautiful visit, and incredible to see my family's origins up close like that. Which brings me to what I really wanted to share with you today. This is one of the chests they used to ship their belongings to Canada. A couple years ago I rescued it out of the back of my nana's garage only for it to sit on my own until last summer. It was in pretty bad disrepair, and so my dad and I replaced some of the brass on the bottom, and then I re-fabric-ed the inside. It's an amazing cedar chest and I use it to store my extra linnens, as well as my stash of halloween costumes.

Isn't it beautiful....along with some chocolate roses (a gift from the boy a while back, after tasting one and almost dying, we both decided they'd be better kept in their wrappers). You can see the original painted on shipping information.

The redone interior, loved this fabric with velveteen spots! There's nothing better than pulling a blanket out of a cedar chest and the way it smells.

Close up of the original hardware... the trim is all the original brass... the end caps and locks however were something else...something rusty, the came off, got a sandblasting, and brass sprayed to match.

Like anything good from the old country, the whole chest is made from recycled materials... the cedar boards looked to have come from fruit pallets.. and all the tin sides has like can labels/ads on it, you can see some peeking through the green paint.

Anyways, this is one of my few, and most cherish family heirloom type things, and was totally worth while lugging across the country to have with me here in Calgary.

Do you have any amazing things passed down in your families?

Three Pairs of New Shoes

So the runners I've been waring are a pair of nike's I got probably four years ago... they're old, and sad looking. Especially compared to all of the fun bright flashy runners that people are sporting these days. Plus they may or may not be contributing to a funky shin splint I've been having lately.

They other contributer might be my continued wearing of a pair of super run down toms day in and day out... which I know I walk oddly on the sides of my feet in (evident by the wear through on the inside only). SO combined I decided to get a new pair of runners and/or a pair of comfortable shoes I wouldn't mind wearing round the lab (better support than the toms).

Lucklily sportchek (which has the worst service ever BTW how long can it possibly take to find a pair of shoes.... and how can you forget 3 times what size I want when I'm the only customer there) had a buy one get one 50% off sale. So I eventually (it took almost an hour) walked away with these two pairs.

Love these bright pink and neon yellow asics... as the boyfriend said "do a lot of running at night do you?" and while no I don't I could in these bad boys... also they match the growing amount of lulu stuff I have that is neon yellow.

These nike's were picked out because 1 nike's have never let me down as far as runners go, and 2 they're a bit more sensibly coloured for day time wear. I'd link back to the nike website... but it's so gosh darn difficult to find my way to the shoes, I just can't be bothered.... sorry nike...

I haven't run in either of them yet, but promise to give one pair of them a go tomorrow night and let you know all about it.

As for the third pair of shoes, last week I had my first ballet class in years... and I pulled out my old leather split soled slippers... and although my feet haven't grown (I swear) they just felt horribly restrictive the whole class... so I thought, well I haven't bought a new pair since I was like 16.... it's time to treat myself.

I went with canvas rather than leather...cause I just don't have it in me to break em in. Hopefully these lovely ladies work like a charm. Added bonus, I didn't have to sew elastics on, and there's no annoying strings to have to remember to keep tucked in.

So that's three new pairs of shoes... and I'm still looking for a fourth pair. I need a pair of black peep toed shoes... in like a two inch max heel... apparently I'm too tall for my current pair in my bridesmaids dress for next month.

Do any shoe shopping lately?

Some seriously tasty Baking

Ok, so I spent most of this weekend reminded by my body that I might be too old for Keg stands, and drinking tequila from the bottle.

But before that I did some excellent baking from two recipe's I had pinned a while back.

1: These apple cinnamon squares are too die for, and so fall appropriate... wish I had had some vannilla ice cream on them.

2: First time ever making brownies from scratch (I've been a terrible supported of the box mix brownies for far too long) this recipe came out the perfect mix of crisp outer, gooey inner. I held off on the red food colouring tho because 1: I only had one small thing of it and 2: it's an intimidating amount to make them just that red.

Anyways, it was the first bit of baking I'd done in a while, another set of recipe's crossed off my pinterest list.

Check out what other food's I'd love to bake here, including a fantastic looking apple pie and some orange creamsicle cupcakes that remind me of summer.

*Oh and I've been a terrible non runner this past week... but increadibly busy, this week I'll do better I promise.

Have you baked anything tasty lately?

Recipe: Healthy Breakfast Hash

All day yesterday I was craving breakfast foods (sweet bacon-y and maple syrup-y goodness). So this morning I threw together for breakfast (and leftovers became lunch) this Health Breakfast Hash/kinda frittata.

Also, I don't ever really count calories when I cook... but I've been reading a lot of healthy/fitness blogs lately so I felt inspire.

Sara's Healthy Breakfast Hash

3 LilyDale Day starters Turkey Breakfast Sausages (cut into little peices)     150cal
1 cup McCain Breakfast Potatoes Shredded Hashbrowns                                70cal
1tbsp butter (I'd rather grease things up natural and tasty)                               35cal
1/2 onion chopped up                                                                                        25cal
1/2 red bell pepper chopped up                                                                         20cal
1/2tbsp Kraft Italian Vinaigrette (this is how I season things sometimes)        20cal

All of the above goes into an oven safe, non stick, pan on the stove, on high. Stir it up freaquently and cook it until the sausage is cooked (no longer pink, and starting to brown) and the potatoes are nice and golden. If you're like me, you were probably also getting ready for work and maybe burned things a tiny bit).

Next up you want to mix in a bowl the following:

1/3 cups egg whites                                                   40cal
2 large eggs                                                              150cal
1/3 cup Kraft Shredded Tex Mex, light                     80cal

Then just pour it on top, and mix it in real quick (doesn't have to be well mixed). Then you want to cook it on the stove top for a couple min (for the bottom to cook) then throw the whole pan into the oven, right under the broiler for another 5-10 min for the eggs to cook from the top down. When it's all done there should be no more liquid egg, and things should be looking golden.

So what's in that pan?

Total Calories: 590

So for the serving size... I divided things up into thirds... which was enough to fill me right up. For just under 200cal. Which considering that breakfast is recommended to be 20-25% of your daily intake, and my recommended intake is probably around 1800. That leaves me with bonus 160 breakfast calories to spare on say a big glass of orange juice.

Which I didn't have in my fridge so I went with water.... and thru on a little light sour cream for added yummyness.

But it just goes to show you that it is possible to whip up a classically 'greasy, diner style' breakfast and still make it super healthy for you. (from a calorie counting perspective at least, I'm sure my boyfriend would still find things to critique, but he eats way better than me).

I won a BlackBerry Music Gateway

About two weeks ago I sent the following Tweet out into the Twitterverse.

" Springsteen Toronto 2012 Sit Tight Take Hold Thunder Road!"

Featuring this photo, snapped with my BlackBerry Torch (I really do love this phone) at the Springsteen concert I went to with my dad in August.

OK... so not a great quality photo, but not half bad from an old cell phone held up in the air while I sang (yelled) out the lyrics to the song.

And why did I send this tweet? BlackBerry was having a contest where you could win a Music Gateway.

If I'm totally honest with you, 1. I didn't know what a Music Gateway was at the time and 2. I misread the contest tweet as a 'Music Getaway' and though you might win a trip. While I'm still holding out for the trip. I did win the Music Gateway.

Actual size is like the size of a tic tac container. Image from crackberry.com

It arrived this morning, and I immediately set it up; a process the took 2 minutes.

Step one: plug it into the wall.
Step two: plug it into your stereo or tv through the audio in.
Step three: find it via the Bluetooth on your BlackBerry phone or tablet.
Step four: press play and enjoy!

So after using it all day, what do I like about it (apart from having won it for free)?

Well, when I got home from work, before even walking through the door of my apartment I turned on my playlist from my phone. The Bluetooth range seems to be just fine for my entire one bedroom apartment... further testing to see if I can get it from down the hallway still needs to be done. Also you have you music playing and you still have your phone, unlike iPhone docking systems where the phone has to sit there plugged in to listen to music. And you don't have to get up to change songs or turn it on or off. Tomorrow morning when I wake up to my alarm (on my phone) you can certainly bet I'll have some tunes playing from the other room about one second later.

So thank you very much Research in Motion people. I never win things, and was super excited to win this.

Yours truly,

A diehard crackberry addict.

Today I: am back to class, and learning NMR

OK, so I just had to share this real quick, because it`s got me feeling a little like this kitty:

SO I`m doing a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, so it stands to reason that I might have to take a couple graduate level biochem courses, tonight I have the first lecture of possibly my last class ever. The topic for the evening, metabonomics and pharmacology. The papers assigned to read in advance feature a lot of techniques, and a lot on NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance)  of which I previously know very little about... having coming from a physiology based undergrad (not biochemistry). The moral of this story is, in reading one of these papers I came across this sentence....and subsequently feel like the above cat.

``An NMR spectrum of biofluids can be thought of as an object with a multidimentional set of metabolic coordinates, the values of which are the spectral intensities at each data point, and the spectrum is therefor a point in a multidimensional metabolic hyperspace.``
(Lindon JC, Holmes E and Nicholson JK, 2006)

So there you have it.....hopefully tonight`s class goes better than the reading of the papers did... looks like I`ll be working double time this semester.

A Free Rattan Peacock Chair

So for those of you who follow my twitter (@Turner_SR) you might know that this Monday, I cam home from work to find the most awesome thing in the free stuff pile in the entrance of my apartment building. And I've found great free things there before too!

This time is was a vintage (I'm assuming) 1970's Rattan Peacock Chair.

So even though I had my hands full of my backpack, my gym bag, a sweater and probably a million other things, I dragged this bad boy into the elevator and up to my apartment. Currently I'm not sure where I'm going to put it (might involve some rearranging of the old bed room) but in the mean time, here's some great pictures featuring these throne-like chairs.

Image Sources 1&2 / 3 / 4

Now I just need an awesome seat cushion or two.... or maybe a sheep skin from ikea?

Have you ever found something this awesome for free?

Road to My First Half Marathon : Week 1

This Tuesday I took the leap and registered for my first Half Marathon, which is goal number 1 on my list of 25 things to do before I'm 25. I gave a little recap of what running has been like for me this year, and have made a serious week one effort to get myself going.

Training this week:

So that's an alright start... 3 solid beginner runs, but next week I'll try to get a 10km in there somewhere.

Where do you usually run? I'm a huge fan of treadmills I must say, it's very difficult for me to keep a sustainable pace on my own (I run too fast and need breaks too soon) so by setting a slightly slower pace on the treadmill, I can really stretch out the distance before I need a walking pace. Hopefully if I do enough running at that pace it will translate over to the road.

But I do love running outside, Calgary is crisscrossed with extensive path systems. This Saturday I ran along the south shore of the Bow river from 11th over to the East Village, and stopped to snap some quick pictures of the beautiful scenery.

Are you considering starting to run? Maybe you should, here's 6 Reasons to Start Running. Wanna go big or go home? Here's 10 rules for running marathons or halfers!  And if I could get off my butt and commit to it, so can you. Here's to 9 weeks left!

100th post

Yeah! this is an awesome milestone! Thanks for sticking with me over the last hundred posts... here's to making the next 100 even better than the first!

Want to go on Pilgrimage with Me?

The other day, I stumbled onto the 2010 movie The Way while browsing Netflix Canada. The movie stars Martin Sheen, who travels to France upon learning of his (somewhat) estranged son's death in the Pyrenees. He had just began the 800km long El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James), the route traveled on foot by pilgrims for over a thousand years, through northern Spain to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela where the Apostle James' remains are believed to be buried. Sheen, upon recieving the backpack and gear his son had packed for the journey he only just began, decides to walk the Camino, spreading his son's ashes along the way. In doing so he encounters a trio of other unlikely pilgrims, and finds somethings about himself.

Anyways, good movie, and it leaves me thinking.... why don't I go on pilgrimage? The last 20 years or so have seen a huge rise in modern pilgrimages (for believers and non-believers alike). It's in incredible way to explore some of humanity's oldest routes and meet some phenomenal people along the way. Oh yeah... and you usually have to commit to walking, often for months at a time.... so maybe I can't go on pilgrimage today, but as I informed my supervisor at our lab meeting Friday Morning, if my project doesn't pick back up soon... I just might pack up a bag and start walking.

Here are a couple of the pilgrimages I'd love to do.

El Camino de Satiago, the Way of St. James, Spain

765km if your start in St-Jean, France. The route taken in the above movie. Would take about 4 weeks, and take me through some of the most beautiful landscape Northern Spain has to offer.

The Hajj, to Mecca, Saudi Arabia

One of (if not the most) commonly walked pilgrimages is the Hajj, walked by millions of the devout every year, as the Fifth Pillar of Islam, every able bodied Muslim is expected to complete the Hajj at least once in their lives. However, it is also one of the most dangerous, since it is scheduled once a year, there have been hundreds of deaths along the route or at the religious ceremonies at the completion (due to being trampled by the masses of worshipers).  Maybe, this is one worth doing in the off season, to walk the path, starting and ending at the Great Mosque in Mecca, that countless millions have walked since the time of Abraham.

Bodh Gaya, the Place of Enlightenment, Bihar, India

There are four main pilgrimage sites in Buddhism, and after the birthplace of Gautama Siddahrta, the Place of Enlightenment is a close second. During the full moon of Vaisakh (April/May ish on the Hindu Calendar) the trek to Bodh Gaya is most commonly undertaken. While most pilgrims to Bodh Gaya travel by modern means, there is supposed to be development into the Buddha Trail, and some travel sites include walking tours through some of Buddhisms most important sites. Either way, I would love to go to India, ASAP.

Oh and speaking of long walks and hikes. Kelley, from a Crooked Trail, did a guest post over at  Secondhand Sundays, listing the 6 best hikes in the world (or at least the 6 ones she'd most like to do) kinda sad no Canadian destinations on that list, but I'd happily do any of them.

4 simple goals

Today I'm linking up with A Beautiful Mess, and Sharing my 4 Simple Goals.

As you might be aware, I already have a bucket list of goals, 25 to be precise, to accomplish before my 25th birthday in February, but based on the nature of the goals suggested, I thought why not add another 4, to hold close over the last 4 months of 2012.

You see, the purpose of these goals is not to accomplish a specific task, but rather to focus on to improve your life in general. Things that if I work hard towards over the next 4 months, might just become habits that I keep indefinitely. So here they are, my 4 simple goals.

  1. No More Snooze Button! this might just be the hardest one for me, so lets get it out there right away. I am a snooze button monster. It is so easy for me to hit snooze every 5 minutes for an entire hour. To avoid being perpetually late, I set my alarm way earlier than I need to, knowing I'm going to hit snooze. This needs to stop, people like @TrainerErrick and posts like the one I found yesterday on what successful people do with the first hour of their day; (and my own plain common sense) tell me how important it is to wake up and seize the day. My most productive days are the ones when I hop right out of bed and get at it. So goal number one, get rid of the snoozing, and get going!
  2. Prints, prints, prints! I have been living in my apartment here in Calgary for over a year now. And I don't have a single picture of family or friends up anywhere! One of my best friends @setulk prints her photos within days of taking them, Every time I go to her apartment there are new photos up on the walls (always perfectly framed too!) and it's so cozy. This may be a cop out goal, because it is one of my 25, but I'm making it a huge priority. I want my home to be full of memories and love... and sometimes that means getting the pictures off my PC and onto my walls.
  3. Just Keep Running! An obvious one, considering if you've been around my blog this week you know I've got a half marathon set for November 11. So this goal comes in two parts.....(1) run, at least 3 times a week (at least!) between now and race day. (2) don't stop because you finished your race, as was this issue with my first 10 back in May, I ran hard and long leading up to it, and then fizzled out as soon as I was done. This should not be about finishing a race, but about becoming someone who can honestly call themselves a runner.
  4. Read that stack on Papers! On my desk at work, and on my table here at home, I have stacks of papers to read for school. Stacks! and they constantly grow (especially now because I'm going to be taking another course this semester) So I need to get reading, I need to be in the habit of tucking in to at least one a day during the week. Grad school is a very self directed learning process, some of which comes from doing the actual science, but a lot of which comes from reading. You have to have yourself fully immersed in the literature, all the time, to be successful. So I need to up my game, and become someone who regularly is reading, not just in spurts and bursts.

Fascinated With Fridays : 3 Separate Things

Here's what's captured my interest this Friday!

As the re-release of the 1998 must have toy, the Furby, is making headlines this week, Hello Giggles had a fun post featuring other toy fad's of the 90s. Many of which, skip-its, pogs, floam; were immediately banned from my elementary school. (krazy bones, and snap bracelets were also banned from the play ground, but interestingly did not make the list).

As I finally got around to opening the cover of this summer's AIHS Research News, the first story drew my attention. University of Alberta law professor Timothy Caufeild's book 'The Cure for Everything' is supposed to be worth a read. In it he debunks many health myth's and cures, often using himself as a guinea pig, all in an effort to drive home the message that healthy living really is the cure for everything. Don't have time to read the book? You can just read his article on the Huffington Post "9 Health Myths Debunked."

I've been feeling in a bit of a lab related rut lately, maybe too many days spent on the same equipment, maybe just contemplation about being one year in with no end in sight. Anyways this leads me to wanting to feel more motivated, get successful, I know there have been a bunch of posts round the blog-o-sphere recently about 'Eating your Frog' so here's one about 'What Successful People Do with the First Hour of Their Work Day." How do you start off your day, with a specific ritual? I'd love to try to get into some wake-up sun salutations.

Another Sexy Equinox Yoga Ad

So remember when I shared my fascination with Yoga ads, and the controversy they inspire? (Here!) Well Yoga Dork has drawn my attention to the fact that Equinox (health and fitness club which also sell a clothing line including yoga underthings) has done it again, with a second, stunning, sexy, mind boggling yoga add.

So maybe if I was as good at yoga as Briohny Smyth clearly is, I'd be able to convince the boyfriend to come do it with me sometime, hmmmmm?

But I guess if I'm going to get better (my talents are mostly limited to basic ashtanga...oh and I can touch my head to my knees!) that means getting back to the studio. Yoga Shala here I come, I'm pretty sure I've got like 5 more passes to use up before they expire on me!

What do you think about this one? Is it beautiful, or distasteful?

10 Weeks to My Half Marathon

As I mentioned yesterday, I signed up for my first half marathon, which is my 1st goal on my 25 before 25 list.

Starting last January, I was 0% a runner, and only periodically active, I decided I would change that by boldly deciding that this year I would run a half marathon, a whopping 21km. And promptly began working towards it.

I signed myself up for a Daily Mile Account (where you can track your running, workouts, swims whatever) and along with one of my best friends took to the gym, the track and the roads. I tell you that first 5km nearly killed me.... and even if you run beside me today you'd think I have asthma from the sound of my breathing (my boyfriend's almost got me convinced).

Either way I worked at it hard until May when I ran 10km in 1h4min for the Scotia Bank Calgary Marathon Jugo Juice 10km (that's a lot of sponsors people). Then Summer hit, and with it I travelled to Italy, Colorado, Hawaii, Chicago, Ontario.....it seemed like every two weeks I was off some place else. My boyfriend would tease me about when I would get training for the Spartan Race we had coming up, and I'd keep putting it off until I was finally in Calgary for longer than it took for me to unpack my bags.

Typical running look for me...nothing better than Wonder Under Leggings from lulu.

This Saturday I ran the University of Calgary, DinoDash 10km, and it took 2min longer than my first one back in May....and I only ran 3 times in the month preceding it. So although my lack of training didn't result in me declining too far, I certainly haven't improved.

Yesterday I took the plunge and committed myself to the Last Chance Half Marathon on November 11th. It's going to be cold, it's going to be long... but more importantly I'm going to be ready for it. The first part of that is making up a running plan and sticking with it.

Now there are tonnes of free running plans online. I found one I liked from Fitness Magazine for free. You can also find a free one on About.com ... or pay for one through Runner's World. In fact just googling beginner's half marathon program, will bring up just about any style plan you want.

I printed out some blank calendar pages and started pencilling runs in, along with the boot camps I'm already doing twice a week, and the dance classes I plan on starting soon.

You can follow me on daily mile, which I'll try to update daily, twitter where I'll tweet my runs, or here on my blog where I'm going to give honest to blog updates of my successes and failures along the way.

Last Chance Half Marathon

Alright kids! I've gone and committed myself to the Last Chance Half Marathon here in Calgary on Nov.11, I registered and paid and everything.

That gives me a little over 2 months to get myself ready to do it (considering my longest run to date has been only 14km...I genuinely need to get working myself up). Which means I gotta get back on the treadmill, and back in the gym, and back on the roads...full time between now and then.

I'm going to hold myself accountable, so you better too!

Any ways, this isn't a really thought out, planned or otherwise interesting post, but I thought that step one of making myself go through with this is telling the internet about it.

Just Like Nana Does it: Homemade Perogies!

Alright, so Perogies are just about my favourite thing to eat, and even tho they're not Italian, we still have them at my Nana's quite often. Yesterday I finally got around to making some from scratch. Here's how I pulled it off!

The Dough
  • 4.5 cups all purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups light sour cream
  • 3 eggs
  • 1tbsp salt
  • 2tbsp veggie oil
Put it all in a bowl and kneed it together until it's nice and smooth. The dough is quite thick, but much moister than a pasta dough (like the one I made here). I ended up adding about a third cup of milk as I was going because there was a lot of dry loose flour, but then Alberta's really dry and I find I often have to up the liquid part of recipes.

Once you've kneeded it...by hand mind you....until your arms are dead, and the dough looks like this, wrap it up and let it sit at room temp while you make the filling.

The Filling

I made potato, bacon and cheese perogies...  but as far as filling goes, you can put anything you feel like into mashed potatoes, just pre-cook everything.

Peel and 1/8th 6 potatoes (I used russets which are average size, and peeled them on the couch while watching top model....OMG that girl with her mother, seriously!)

And boil them in salted water, meanwhile I used scissors to cut up a half pound of bacon, and I fried it until it was crispy....this took about the same time as the boiling, coordinated or what?

Once the potatoes were cooked, I drained them and mashed them. Then tossed in the bacon bits, about 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese and a big old scoop of light cheese whiz. I just kept mashing everything together (once again, don't stop until your arms are dying). And seasoned with some onion salt.

Assembly

So as you can see above, I rolled out 1 quarter of the dough to about 1/4inch thickness, and used a glass to cut circles. I spooned on a heaping table spoon of filling. The you have to stretch the dough while you fold it over the filling, trying to avoid any air bubbles while not letting the filling escape. You just pinch them closed. Hard. Twice (no need for like egg wash or anything).

As you can see from the above tray, I was paranoid that they wouldn't stay pinched closed, and rolled the edges as I went...this results in a think roll of dough on the edge of the perogy, which I didn't mind but you might. They should stay sealed with just pinching. Also I hate used a rolling pin, so after the first quarter of the dough, I did the rest sheeting it in my pasta machine on the largest setting. Then cut squares about the same size of the circles above...this worked just as well, and way faster too!

Cooking

You can either freeze them raw and cook later, or cook them up fresh, I froze 30, and cooked the other 9. To cook, bring a big pot of salted water to boiling. Mean while. in a small pan, I cooked half an onion, chopped, in a tbsp butter, on medium the whole time I was getting the water boiling and the perogies cooked. Once the water was boiling I gently dropped in the pergies, stir once so they don't stick to the bottom. Then just cook until they float...then an extra minute to be sure. Easy as pie. Scoop them out of the water, add the fried onions and a huge dollop of sour cream and you are good to go!

Now doesn't that just sound like good old fashioned deliciousness?

Enjoy! Ciao!

Mingle Monday - Labour Day

Hello ladies, I haven't done a mingle Monday in a looong time, but here's to labour day so lets go ahead in do this!

Today's question...How are you spending your Labour Day?

My answer:
