So I've been a terrible little bogger person.... really I just like to read the rest of your blogs.
But here's an update, so my blogger profile pic has always been one of me with a snake, taken years ago on a trip to the Dominican Republic.
I love this picture, at the time I told myself, I can put the snake on me because I'm way smarter than the girls on top model and if they can do it so can I.
When I was in vegas this month, I upped the ante.
So once again, with a bigger snake:
Oh yeah, I feel bad ass!

Day Seven...Fave Movies
So some of the blogs I follow are doing the 30 day challenge over at Katie's Journey.
I thought I'd pop in at day 7.
Today we're supposed to list our favourite movies, and I love soooo many movies that I'll have to go with the ones that come to mind first.
And that's all I can think of right now.
In other news I recently painted my nails a neon sherbet peach colour, kinda fantastic. Vegas was great, maybe I'll get around to posting pictures soon. I spent 8 hours at work yesterday running an elisa (fun times). And I feel like I'm 15 again, maybe it's because I've got a big old hickie!

- Star Wars - all of them
- The new Star Trek, not that the old ones aren't great, but the new one was fantasticle!
- Across the Universe - Because of the music and the colours and the wonderful.
- V for Vendetta - and I am currently reading the graphic novel.
- Airplane the movie! - this was my parent's first date too!
And that's all I can think of right now.

FMM: What I love about fall!
What do I love about fall?
The smell!
More than anything else I love the way the leaves decaying makes the air smell, it's so crisp, and it's really a smell you only get on clear, dry fall days.
Call me crazy if you will, but it's the smell of fall that really gets me into the mood for fall. For cute outfits, and light scarves. Raking leaves in to great big piles. The beauty of the colours as the change.
That's the worst thing about Alberta right now, I miss the maple trees, here everything just seems to be going the same old yellow colour, back home there'd be reds and oranges of every shade too!
What do you love most about Fall? Head over to All the Weigh, and link up with Friend Makin' Mondays.

The Tour Train, out of Sault Ste. Marie, goes from a 4 car train to a 20+ car train in the fall,
as tourists visit from all around Canada, and the world.

Today I...
Today I...
Had my first lesson of the Fundamentals of Optical Microscopy course I'm taking.
Wrote the intro to the paper I'm working on... first draft only mind you.
Let my boss know I need two extra days off for my Vegas for Thanksgiving trip.
Did a crappy oxytocin dose response... going to have to redo it my way I think?
Put my cells on low serum media so I can run a fun prostaglandin experiment tomorrow.

Free beers!?
So they say that where ever there is free food, or a free drink, grad students will be there.
And although today's guest lecture was excelent and very interesting (especially for someone who does love imunology despite being in a smooth muscle lab) at the end of the champange reception, there was just a crowd of drinking students staying until they closed the bar out.
And since I can't find an appropriate PhD comic to support this, here's a good one anyways
Things to do while waiting for an experiment to run.

Picked a PhD
So I've decided who really needs a master's degree? I mean I've worked in a lab for the past 8 months, and had several excellent lab positions/experiences before that. And I've just let Long Hair (my boss/supervisor... who does in fact have long hair for a man) and one of his colleagues talk me into just applying right into the PhD program next year.
Well there's a 4 year commitment decided upon in a hour.... well not really an hour, this is something I've been talk with myself about for the last 4 months. So hurray! it's all decided and stuff.
In other news, I moved up to my new lab today... going to take a break (kinda) from mesenterics and spend some time learning about myometrium. Here's a look around.
Well not really a look around, labs are all confidential and stuff... so instead it's just a generic back drop style shot. As for that totally awesome shirt I'm wearing, it's vintage liz claiborne, picked it up for 5 bucks on ebay. The belt is from pac sun.... its was cheep... that's all I know about it. Oh I found it here.
Anyways, this is the face of someone committed to being a student till she's 27 (minimum).

Working on Sunday!
I have to drag myself in to the lab shortly to put in a solid 8 hours on the myograph, (an awesome set up for working with real, pressurized, blood vessels) and make edits on a paper.
It's Sunday!
Gotta love putting in extra hours, but since as of monday I work in a different lab then the one I have been working on my thesis project in, and since me thesis project is not quite done yet, I gotta finish it on my own time.
Yesterday however, I spent at a loverly new mall Cross Iron Mills, and shopped myself out... we litterally skipped a whole quarter of the mall just from exhaustion and lack of funds. I picked up two cute pairs of boots, a jacket, a couple sweaters, and 3 cute dresses to wear when I'm in Vegas next month.
Did I mention I'm going to Vegas for Canadian Thanksgiving?

Sept. TO DO
So in the past I've found it helpful to make a list of goals for a month at a time. Since its Sept first let's give it a go.
Cheers!
- Do up figure for first paper (if you get lucky it'll be accepted by the end of the month?)
- Write first draft for other paper (should be something I can get finished this long weekend)
- Finish sweater
- Join some sort of sports team for the fall, and meet new people
- Sign up for adults ballet class (this one's still only a maybe)
- Go to minimum 10 yoga classes this month (tally so far-zip!)
- post-post-post!
- buy yourself a lulu hoodie... you deserve one!
- Poster for III research day at work
- Hair cut (lets try not to go 6 months between cuts this time)
- Clean up shit!
- Kick ass in new lab
Cheers!

Knit 1 Purl 2
So I've finally gotten around to casting on a new sweater (tell that to the unfinished one in my knitting drawer and I'm sure it'll be thrilled).
The pattern is from the fall 2010 Knit Simple (which has to be my fave knitting magazine because a: the patterns are wearable and b:they are nice and easy and don't take months and months....and months).
I've made one major change tho (apart from buying size 4 yarn when pattern calls for 5 opps hope that turns out). I hate piece knitting, so I threw it on to round needles.
Here's what it should eventually look like:
~Update! Since I tried and failed to get this post up last night, I've made some progress today, my sweater is officially 7 stripes long now.
Well I'm off to forgo the arts for a while and hit up some science, I have a figure to get together tonight to go into what will hopefully be my first published paper this fall, cheers!

Dhanurasana - Or why my upper abdominals hurt
I woke up this morning, hung over, at 7AM.
Last night was my supervisor and his wife's joint 75th (they turned 40 and 35 this year) birthday party. It was appropriately 70s themed, and my own problem with hording costume-y clothing was legitimized when I was able to dress not only myself, but two co-workers as well.
The party, which was essentially a small wedding, was a success right until I went to sleep (passed out?) at 3AM. This morning however my body hurt!
It took me quite some time to realize that the intense pain originating just out side my lower rib cage every time I moved was not a result of the heavy drinking I had done, but more likely a result of my return to yoga this week after a week and a half vacation.
There's nothing quite as good, or as painful as an intense hour and a half of yoga, after a week and a bit off first thing in the morning on a Saturday. And although I was grateful for the mental calming and relaxation (Anyone who has never experienced the release of Savasana after an session of pushing you body to it's physical limits, well I highly recommend it) I certainly paid for it today in the angry cries of unused muscles pushed far past the point.
Only thing to do for it. Yoga again tomorrow after work.

Dhanurasana-Mine barely looks this good.
Let alone anything like this.

Just got back
Really this is a most appropriate title for this post since I am back.
Fist back to Calgary after a week in Ontario visiting family and friends.
And back to a blog....since I ran off into hiatus land.
Since the old blog "Sara goes to Calgary" is hardly applicable any more (I've been here for 8 months now), I thought it was time for a reinvention of what I do here.
And so shall begin my life in a lab coat, since I think I have found a game plan in a life in science.
The experiences I have had over the last eight months have convinced me around the idea that I do want to pursue research as a career plan... which for now means finishing my undergrad, will eventually mean getting a PhD, and who knows what after that.
So if I am really serious about this and I think I am... I better be off for the evening, I have a lab presentation tomorrow, which of course means I have a date with PowerPoint this evening.
Good Night for now,
Sara
